Male International is a tiny strip on a tiny island. We had a short bus ride across the one and only runway to our seaplane terminal where we boarded a red 'taxi' for the half hour flight journey to Vilamendhoo. Upon arrival we were given welcome drinks and were shown to our bungalow.
Vilamendhoo Island Resort is really all about the water. We rarely left the bungalow without our goggles and snorkels. When we weren't scuba diving, we were chatting with other guests about underwater adventures. The resort is all about experiencing the ocean at its most vibrant.
The staff are wonderful and the sunsets are other worldly. The all inclusive option made our holiday on a great value adventure. The diving on the island itself was great, but we took long boat rides out from Vilamendhoo to reefs that were only marginally better. I sugggest that staying around the huse reef can be just as rewarding. Turtles are everywhere.
The trip back to Male was a horror because of bad weather. We couldn't fly so had to take a slow boat ride on rolling ocean swells that made everyone sick. However, we cannot really blame the weather on anyone so our advice is watch out for the weather reports because the maldives are not always the tropical paradise that they appear in the travel brochures.
